Care for your Makeup Brushes

Like all other jobs there are tools that persons use to get the task completed. For a makeup artist part of their tools are their brushes, and if you are like me you can never have enough. If my memory serves me correctly I have over 50 brushes in my makeup kit, but of course there are the few select that I prefer to use.

Today’s post is about caring for your brushes. Some people sometimes take this for granted with their personal brushes, admittedly myself included. Build-up on brushes can harbor harmful bacteria that can cause acne, zits or severe skin irritations. So, it is not only essential to clean your brushes for hygienic purposes, but to avoid these adverse effects to your skin, and it can even be attributed to saving you a trip to the emergency room and money spent on antibiotics. Yes, it’s that serious! Even more serious is to avoid a potential lawsuit from a client that got a breakout or any adverse reaction after you have done their makeup, or have your brand or reputation slandered. Wow, all this from a dirty brush!

To avoid the above here are some tips for cleaning and caring for your brushes.

Personal Brushes

As these brushes are used every day, to quickly sanitize you can:
  • Make a DIY mixture of water, witch-hazel and mentholated spirit (or a store-bought cleanser that is alcohol based).
  • Mix and pour into a bottle with a spritz nozzle and lightly spray unto brushes.
  • Gently rub out the tip of the brush unto a lint free towel or paper towel
  • This can be done each day before use.

However, powder, foundation and concealer brushes should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a week. Brushes that are used in the eye area can be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a month, and all others at least once monthly.

Thorough Cleanse
Check out the following link, this can be used for your personal brushes but especially on brushes used on clients. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X925-oVMGc

Please note that cleansing also applies to your beauty blenders as well, as these also hold bacteria.
