Trinidad Carnival 2018 is around the corner! It’s that one time of the year where people let go of all inhibitions and ‘free’ themselves, where all cultures put aside their differences and unite, to enjoy the celebration of life as it’s known. It’s an event where person’s artistic talents that are personified in colours, beads, feathers, etc, come alive on the road and stage, as masqueraders ‘dance’ their costumes. In preparation for the celebration that has put Trinidad and Tobago on the world map, as you prepare to chip across or wild out on the stage, you want your makeup to remain ‘on point’ for those photo ops or television debuts. Here are a few makeup tips to be ‘stage’ ready.
Foundation

To avoid those tanned spots that are seen after removal gems that were applied to your face, it is important to use a foundation or face primer with SPF (sun protection factor) to protect your skin from excessive exposure to the sun, and guard again that splotchy effect.

Eyeshadow

Carnival is all about masqueraders parading in their bright coloured costumes and the makeup you wear accentuates your entire look. To get your eyeshadow ‘popping’ it is recommended that you apply an eyeshadow primer and base to get your colours to look brighter and bolder. Glittered eyeshadow is also a great compliment to your look and is great for the season. After you’ve applied foundation, powder and eyeshadow, be sure to apply setting spray to keep your makeup in place and give you a fresh look for the long day ahead. And when you do sweat be sure to pat your face when drying, as wiping may remove your makeup.

Eyelashes

For an added effect to your eyeshadow, eyelashes are a necessary accessory! Some opt for the regular black lashes, others go all out with the coloured lashes. If you are applying them yourself, an eyelash strip is the way to go as its much easier to apply than single lashes. Whichever you choose, be it black or coloured, it is wise to use an eyelash glue to apply your lashes. Please avoid using hair glue for application as this is harmful for your eyes and can cause eye infections. To give a neat and ‘finished’ look apply liquid or gel eyeliner to mask any smudges from the glue.

Lips

For long lasting lips prep your lips as you would the rest of your face. Apply minimal chap stick or other lip moisturizer to your lips, apply foundation over this and set with translucent powder. Apply your bold matte colours and line with a lip liner.

Gems

To finish your look and add some flare to your costume, gems are the way to go. Spirit gum is a great product to use to keep them in place.

You are now ready for the road to chip to sound of Kes as he calls “hello, hello, hello…”. Enjoy and be safe!
